Gifts for Mum

A keepsake from a child’s own hand is often the gift a mum keeps for decades.

Why it lands

Most mums already own every candle they need. They have the spa voucher, the scarf and the flowers that last four days. What they rarely have is a piece that says exactly who made it for them.

A drawing the child chose themselves does that. It carries the huge-handed portrait, the crooked heart and the “MUM” that runs out of room at the last letter. None of that can be bought, and she knows it the moment she sees it.

A keepsake also answers a quiet problem. Every mum has a pile of drawings she cannot bin and cannot keep. This lets her keep one, properly, and wear it.

The look on her face is the whole point.

Necklaces, lockets, bangles, rings and earrings

Mums wear very different things, so start with how she dresses rather than with what looks prettiest. Here are the pieces we would look at first.

The Little Handprint Locket is a polished 20 mm heart engraved with a tiny handprint outline and a small drawn heart. It opens to hold two small photos. The Mama Heart Disc Necklace is a 20 mm disc with a wobbly heart and “mama” in a child’s handwriting, on a 45 cm chain. The “Hugs” Handwriting Bangle is a rigid 4 mm bangle with a single word and a tiny heart. The Little Artist Earrings are a mismatched pair of 8 mm star and heart charms, each carrying a doodle.

Gold-tone and silver-tone options are shown on each product page, along with the published price.

Matching the piece to the mum

If she wears a necklace every day, choose a disc or a locket. They sit below the collarbone and go with almost anything. The Sunshine Disc Necklace and the “I Love You” Oval Necklace are similar in size and worth a look too.

If she is always on her hands, typing, cooking or holding a toddler, a bangle is simple and does not catch. It slips over the hand, with a 60 mm inner diameter, so check that against how she wears her watch or bracelets.

If she wears small earrings and little else, the Little Artist Earrings are the better choice, because they are a gentle way of carrying two small drawings without a chain. Rings are another route: the Doodle Stacking Rings are a set of three slim bands with a star, a heart and a flower, and sizes are confirmed with you after ordering.

Choosing the artwork

Pick something the child is proud of, not necessarily the neatest. A portrait of Mum with enormous hands, a sky full of hearts, or the first time they wrote “MUM” are all good beginnings.

A handprint suits a locket, a short word in handwriting suits a disc or a bangle, and one favourite small picture suits earrings or a charm. If you are not sure which, take a photo of a few and tell us what you are leaning towards.

Take the photo in daylight with the paper flat, and keep the original. We work from the photo or scan, and the paper stays with you.

Let them choose. It is her gift too.

Involve the child

Let them choose, add a word, or hand it over themselves. A keepsake they helped make becomes a story the family tells for years, and she will remember who fastened the chain.

If you are giving it on the children’s behalf, you can still keep them at the centre. They choose the drawing, you send the photo and place the order, and the finished piece carries their own marks rather than yours.

Keep the wobble

It is tempting to ask for a tidier version. Please do not. We keep the mark as it was made, so a shaky heart stays shaky and the letters of “mama” keep their uneven spacing. If a design ever looks too perfect, we have probably gone wrong.

In a few years the handwriting will have changed completely. That is why a drawing from this year, engraved just as it is, is worth more to her than a polished one.

When to give it

Mother’s Day and birthdays are the classic dates. For a new mum, a handprint locket gives the first months something to hold on to, and for a first Mother’s Day, a small piece from a young child or a partner is often what she keeps longest.

Allow generous time. Each design goes through a proof, and we do not offer delivery promises.

How it works

Choose a piece, add it to your basket and send us a photo or scan of the drawing or handwriting. You see a digital proof before anything is made, and nothing goes ahead without your approval. The original stays with you.

Questions people ask

Sizing. Chains, bangles and cuffs are listed with their measurements on each product page, for example the locket’s 45 cm chain. Ring sizes are confirmed with you after ordering. If you are unsure, ask us through the contact page.

Durability. These are small, personal pieces. Keep them away from perfume and hairspray, polish gently with a soft cloth, and take them off for swimming, bathing or exercise. We do not make claims beyond what each product page states.

Gift wrap. We do not publish gift-wrap details on this site. If you would like something specific, ask through the contact page before you order.

Timing. We do not promise a delivery date. Because a design goes through a proof first, start early if there is a date you care about.
